- KING LEAR [THE FOLIO TEXT]
-
- Act 3 Scene 3
-
- (Enter the Duke of Gloucester and Edmond)
- l1l Gloucester Alack, alack, Edmond, I like not this
- l2l unnatural dealing. When I desired their leave that I
- l3l might pity him, they took from me the use of mine
- l4l own house, charged me on pain of perpetual displeasure
- l5l neither to speak of him, entreat for him, or any way
- l6l sustain him.
- l7l Edmond Most savage and unnatural!
- l8l Gloucester Go to, say you nothing. There is division
- l9l between the Dukes, and a worse matter than that. I
- l10l have received a letter this nightùÆtis dangerous to be
- l11l spokenùI have locked the letter in my closet. These
- l12l injuries the King now bears will be revenged home.
- l13l There is part of a power already footed. We must incline
- l14l to the King. I will look him and privily relieve him. Go
- l15l you and maintain talk with the Duke, that my charity
- l16l be not of him perceived. If he ask for me, I am ill and
- l17l gone to bed. If I die for Ætùas no less is threatened meù
- l18l the King my old master must be relieved. There is strange
- l19l things toward, Edmond; pray you be careful.
- (Exit)
- l20l Edmond This courtesy, forbid thee, shall the Duke
- l21l Instantly know, and of that letter too.
- l22l This seems a fair deserving, and must draw me
- l23l That which my father loses: no less than all.
- l24l The younger rises when the old doth fall.
- (Exit)
